and something flashed.

my early 30s.

paying dues to belong to a place

that could tell other people i’d made it.

i don’t miss that version of me.

i mostly feel sorry for him.

i’m glad he’s still back there.

where i left him.

what i never clocked at the time —

i wasn’t paying for golf.

i wasn’t paying for tennis.

i was paying to be seen at a certain altitude.

surrounded by people doing the same thing.
